Tips and hints for online workshops

Tips and Hints

  • How will you prepare yourself for the session? A mindful pause etc?
  • Think about interaction – how will you engage with your audience?
  • Get people talking as they enter the room – or find some other way of creating a welcoming feel such as music.
  • Ask people to say a bit about where they are, share their name, perhaps any needs they might have. You might ask them to change their name on zoom if needed, eg to show where they are currently.
  • Establish ground rules – is it ok for people to just leave, or would you like them to let you know? Maybe ask them to write “BRB” (be right back) in the chat or similar
  • Think about check in and check out. It can feel very dislocating to be coming in and out of zoom rooms.
  • Have a strategy for muting/excluding someone if needed. Please read our FAQs including our boundaries document for more on this https://invcc.home.blog/ecaravan-boundaries/
  • Prep before – get yourself centred, have a checklist/session plan handy
  • Set the tech up: Cables, internet connection, lighting, headphones, quiet setting
  • How will you use the tech? Who is Zoom host? Who is co-host?
  • Think about how you will let people into the room, if you might lock the room or not, who lets people back into the main room if they go offline and you’re in breakout rooms et
  • Do you know technically how and when to do the following? Muting people, dealing with poor connection – including ask to switch off camera, excluding people
  • Using chat: with whole group including in breakout rooms, and with each other. Who will monitor this?
  • Screen sharing – do you know how to use and if/how to allow others to share screen or not?
  • Think about using hand signals, reactions, using props,
